Working with the Michigan Alliance for Families, we offer a comprehensive information and referrals on all disability and education issues involving children and young adults from birth to age 26.
In 2014, staff member Loren Glover worked with 45 families who sought support for their children enrolled in Special Education programs in the Detroit Public Schools, DPS Charter Schools, Education Achievement Authority Schools, Hamtramck Schools, Crestwood Schools, Inkster Schools and the Grosse Pte. Schools.
On two occasions Loren attended hearings within the criminal justice program for children expelled from the school system.

Working with Michigan Alliance for Families, Synergy Partners LLC, Adult Well Being Services, The Arc of Northwest Wayne County, Wayne State University Developmental Disabilities Institute, Michigan Protection and Advocacy Services, The Thurswell Law Firm, Phillip Ross, Cheryl Betz, Leslie Thomas, Mark McWilliams, and Elizabeth Janks, The Arc Detroit presented workshops on:
• Emergency Evacuations
• Basic Behavioral Training
• Free Special Education Legal Clinic
• Social Security and SSI Benefits
• After I’m Gone, Alternatives to Guardianship
People First Self-Advocacy Group
Arc Detroit founded this group in 2002. Currently the People First of Wayne County has 50 members, making it one of the largest self-advocacy groups in Michigan.
This year, Greta Joshua and her sister Dr. Alexa Joshua, represented citizens with disabilities from Wayne County during their visit in Washington D.C., where they spoke to Congressman Gary Peters and other congressional staff regarding issues of concern for persons with disabilities and their families.
Other activities included: a meeting between State Representative Rosemary C. Robinson, meeting with U.S. Senator Carl Levin, advocating for the Affordable Care Act, the United Nations International Rights for Persons with Disabilities, and supporting monthly meetings of self-advocates at Services To Enhance Potential, 4700 Beaufait, Detroit.
